Shri. Rajaram Shankar Shelar, a resident of Andhari ( Phalani) Tal Jaoli Dist. Satara and the founder of Kasaidevi Ashram School, hails from an agricultural family with no educational background. In his youth, he moved to Satara for secondary education without any financial support from his family. To support himself, he worked as a newspaper boy while completing his schooling. He later took on petty construction jobs during his college years and graduated with a B.Com degree.
After establishing himself as a well-known civil contractor associated with the municipality and government departments in Satara, he recognized his social obligation to educate his community. In 1997, he started a primary school on his agricultural land in Andhari, initially enrolling 8-10 students from underprivileged families. This initiative gradually evolved into a full-fledged residential school for students from Std I to Std IX, focusing on children from downtrodden families in the area.
Initially, the school operated without any grant-in-aid, relying solely on donations and the founder’s contributions. With persistent efforts, the school gained recognition and began receiving grant-in-aid from the Government of India’s Department of Social Justice and Empowerment in 2014. It is also recognized by the State Board, Zilha Parishad, and the State Government’s Social Welfare Department.
The school has developed separate buildings for boys’ and girls’ hostels and classrooms. The local community in and around Satara has generously supported the school through donations, both in cash and in kind. The school now boasts a qualified teaching staff and a committed board of directors and trustees who bring social knowledge and career experience to support the school’s development. They are actively involved in fundraising, developing school roadmap, organizing seminars, and guiding students in their future careers.
The school’s accounts are regularly audited with no adverse remarks. Financial records are submitted to the Income Tax Authorities and the Charity Commissioner in a timely manner.
With clean financial records, the school has successfully obtained the 80G certificate under the Income Tax Act, allowing it to benefit donors. Additionally, the school is now eligible to receive CSR donations, further enhancing its support for students and community initiatives. Today, the school and its students are thriving, reaching their fullest potential despite challenges. The dedication of the founder, the support of the community, and the involvement of a committed board have all contributed to the school’s success.
